Limestone faced Scoil Naomh Bride, Tullach Ui Chadhain, built in 1862, with a post 2000 annex on right. A Victorian cast-iron post box (with VR initials) is set into the front wall. Royal Mail post boxes were painted bronze-green from 1859 until 1874 when the red colour became standard. Post boxes in Ireland were painted green after the Irish Free State was established in 1922.

Thick layers of fine yellow silts exposed in an esker cutaway provide an ideal habitat for sandmartins to build nest holes. The road is just above the grass overlyng the silt layers.

Join Prof. Martin Feely, Geologist and Dr. Caitriona Carlin Ecologist, both based at NUIG, for an encounter in the esker landscape Tullykyne to Killanin – the only esker on the west side of the Corrib.

Listen to Martin to find out how and when eskers were formed and what they are made of.  Hear from Caitriona how that influences the wealth of wildlife associated with eskers and learn some facts about historical sites in the vicinity.

We will set off from Tullykyne National School at 10.00am and finish for refreshments and complimentary access at Brigit’s Garden.  The distance is about 4.5km. As we will stop along the way to look at the esker profile and point out plants and animals, also noting sites of historical interest, the walk will take about 2 – 2.5 hours.

Car parking available at Tullykyne School and transport will be available to take you back to your car from Brigit’s Garden after the event.

Please do dress for the weather, bring water and suncream if necessary. All are welcome, children must be accompanied by an adult.
