Brachiopods by the Church

The Sean Reilig is not the only graveyard where fossils appear in Maigh Cuilinn.  A stroll around the newer graveyard beside Moycullen’s present church also holds several limestone gravestones marked with brachiopod fossils.  A rough-cut stone, a smoother one, and an older slab similar to those in the Sean Reilig reveal brachipod fossils.

The current church, the third parish church, was built in 1953 through the efforts of the local community and emigrants abroad. It replaced the second parish church, built in 1826 by Fr. Peter Daly during a time of poverty and hardship.
