BALLYCUIRK EAST- Baile Ui Chuirc

Ballycuirke East (Baile Uí Chuirc Thoir) is a townland in County Galway, Ireland, situated within the civil parish and electoral division of Moycullen. It covers an area of approximately 54.24 hectares (134 acres).The greater portion of this townland consists of a rocky pasture. The remainder of it is cultivated. Moycullen R. C. Chapel and School House near the W. boundary. Ballycurk Village is nearly central. Nothing else remarkable in this townland.

Situation:

E. of the parish. Bounded on the N. by Moycullen and Killarainy, on E. by Moycullen and Clooniff, on South by Ballycurk E., and on West by Uggool and Kylebroghlan. N.B. In Moycullen townland additional boundaries have been marked out by Mr. Buck, Boundary Surveyor and Ballycurk W. is a subdenomination of it.

 

Griffin Valuation

The Griffith’s Valuation indicate that there were two occupants: Michael Lydon and Thomas Walsh.  Together, they collectively held a total of 130 acres.  The annual valuation for the land was £27-10-0, with an additional £3-5-0 for buildings, bringing the total annual valuation of rateable property to £28-15-0. The land belonged to Richard Darcy and Michael Lydon.

Michael at 70 is head of the household. He is a farmer. His wife Catherine,60, assists  with the farming. They have four children Dan, 36,Michael 34, Pat, 32 and Julia 25. They all assist with the farming.

Regan

Bridget Regan, a 39-year-old widow and Roman Catholic farmer from County Galway, is listed as the head of the household. She lives with her three children: Jane (13), a scholar; Walter (10), a scholar; and Michael (7), a scholar. All three children are literate and unmarried, but Bridget herself is unable to read. The family speaks both Irish and English, and all members are Roman Catholic. Bridget Regan’s household in County Galway was classified as a 2nd class dwelling. This classification indicates a house constructed of durable materials such as stone or brick, typically featuring a thatched or slated roof. Such dwellings usually comprised five to nine rooms and had two to four windows at the front.

The siblings, Dan, Michael, Pat and Julia with their niece/daughte Mary are resident . Pat is described as head of the household and is a farmer by occupation. They can all read and write and are Roman Catholics.

O Rèagàun
