The Sionnach /An Maidrín Rua wasn’t very popular as it was a threat to livestock and poultry.

However, people also had a grudging respect for the fox due to its reputation as a cunning creature and master of deception.

Fishermen had a particular fear and dislike of the fox. It was considered a bad omen, and the sight or even the mention of a fox was often enough to stop a fisherman from going out to sea that day.

Cures

There are numerous mentions in the folklore collection about using a fox’s tongue to draw deep thorns or splinters out of a hand or foot.
