FOSSILS IN FOLKLORE

The Irish word for fossils is “iontaise,” which is closely related to “iontas,” meaning wonder. This connection feels fitting, as fossils often inspire awe and curiosity. Yet, one of the most striking discoveries during our research has been the near-complete absence of references to fossils in the Irish Folklore Collections or the Schools’ Collection. In many other countries, fossils feature prominently in folk beliefs, with various cures, superstitions, and stories attached to them.

Here in our village, while there are some legends associated with limestone, we found no folklore specifically tied to the fossils embedded within it, even though fossils are spread widely throughout our community. It seems likely that local people focused on the practical uses of limestone—for building, agriculture, or other purposes—rather than marveling at the fossilized remains it contained.
