Matthias Burke and The Eire National Association

In August 2017 Moycullen Historical Society were delighted to have Peter Burke, Journalist & Broadcaster from New Zealand, attend one of our committee meetings.

Peter was in Ireland to address the Global Irish Diaspora Congress at UCD, about "The Deportees - The Untold Story".

Peter's father, Matthias Burke from Ballydotia, Moycullen, left Ireland for New Zealand in 1929.  On January 16th 1942, the National Service Department drew up a list of 155 Irishmen living in New Zealand with the intention of deporting them back to Ireland. Peter has kindly permitted us to upload the presentation telling his father's story and that of the conscientious objectors.

A dedicated website has been set up by Peter where you can follow the progress of his book which is due to be released in 2019.
