A Friendly Face of Moycullen: Remembering Postman John Audley

John Audley, September 1980
Hazel Morrison

This photo from September 1980 captures the warm, familiar face of Moycullen’s much-loved postman, John Audley. Leaning over the side gate at Morrison’s, with what is now the rear of The White Gables behind him and the roof of The Co-Op in the distance, John is shown exactly as so many remember him: always ready to stop, chat, and share a friendly word with the people of the village.

Originally from the townland of Parke, John came to Moycullen in his early teens to work for shopkeeper and publican Mal Caulfield, whose premises today is known as Regan’s Bar. Around 1943–1944, he purchased a site on the Mountain Road from Jack Cullinane—owner of what was then Cullinane’s Bar, now An Bodhrán Buí—and built the home that his son Kieran and his family still call home.

In 1952–1953, John expanded his efforts by building and operating a grocery shop beside his house, further cementing his place in the daily life of the community.

John’s wife, Mary Jane, passed away in 1955, and after a short period working as a driver for Silke’s of Galway in the early 1960s, John took on the role that would define his legacy: he became Moycullen’s village postman. For more than two decades, he served with kindness, humour, and an unfailing dedication to the people he met along his route, retiring on 4 November 1982.

Sadly, the retirement he had earned was brief. John passed away less than two months later, on 28 December 1982, joining his beloved Mary Jane.

Today, John’s three daughters — Ethna, Ursula, and Audrey — live away from Moycullen, while his sons Tony and Kieran continue to play active and valued roles in our community. John’s legacy lives on not only through his family but also through the fond memories of all who recall the postman who always had time for a chat at the gate.
