Moycullen Heritage would like to invite you to our forthcoming event

‘Corrib Shores: these are our people’

to be held at 19.30pm-21.30pm

on 5th July, 2024,

in An Halla Mór, Scoil Mhuire, Church Road, Maigh Cuilinn, Co. Galway.

Following a successful run at Galway City Museum, this exhibition features a ‘meitheal’ of stories researched and shared by communities from around Lough Corrib (Galway City, Menlo, Headford, Donaghpatrick/Kilcoona, Cong, Cor na Móna, Oughterard, Collinamuck and Maigh Cuilinn/Moycullen).

Those local to Maigh Cuilinn area you will hear about:-

• A Killagoola man, founder of a Kansas town USA – Judge William Patrick Madden
• A Moycullen Parish Priest who compiled a local eighteenth century ‘census’ – Fr Francis Xavier Blake
• An Oughterard lady, a Pioneering Garda in Ireland – Peig Tierney
• A Cloonmore man in two armed United States forces – Richard Edmund Barrett
• Not one, but THREE, Olympians who attended Tullokyne school – John Joyce, Matt Hynes, Fiona Murtagh

The exhibition recognises the impact of fourteen ‘everyday heroes’ and how their stories highlight the culture and heritage of the Corrib hinterland and its people, including promoting pride of place, traditions of Irish music, folklore and adventure, both at home and abroad.

To compliment the exhibition, the evening will also feature some local music, dance from the Arlene Cooke School of dancing finishing off with refreshments.

Testament to the success of the research carried out for this exhibition, Maigh Cuilinn will be pleased on the night to have in attendance three generations of Judge Madden’s family travelling from USA. Until now, they were not aware Maigh Cuilinn was home soil.

• Ní hé amháin, ach TRÍ, Oilimpeach a d’fhreastail ar scoil Tulach Uí Chadhain

Tugann an taispeántas seo aitheantas don tionchar a bhí ag na “gnáth laochra” seo ar an saol, agus ar chultúr agus ar oidhreacht cheantar na Coiribe. Tugtar aitheantas freisin do dhul chun cinn na traidisiúin Éireannacha , ceol Gaelach, béaloideas, mórtas áite sa mbaile agus i gcéin.
