walk outline
Walter will give a brief history of Moycullen at An Fuarán and he will then lead the participants along the 6.5km loop walk to Moycullen Castle and An Sean Reilig (which is an adjunct to the Castle). He will point out places and sites of interest along the way.
Moycullen Castle is the birth place of Roderic O’Flaherty, 17th century historian, antiquarian, author and scholar. Historians such as Hardiman describe the ‘castle and mannour of Moycullen’ which in ‘A.D.1586 belonged to Rory O’Flahertie, grandfather of our author, who was himself called Rory Oge of Moycullen’. Today there is only a little evidence of the original O’Flaherty Castle but there exists a later structure known as Moycullen lodge on the site of the castle.
The Graveyard, c.300m East of Moycullen Castle, contains a medieval church, now in a ruinous state. Within the graveyard there are fine examples of vocational stones and this graveyard is the burial ground of the O’Flaherty family where slabs exists on which the O’Flaherty family crest is sculptured.
