Our Irish Women Launch Invite

Our Irish Women Launch Invite

First local event of Heritage Week 2019

Moycullen Heritage, as part of National Heritage Week 2019, partnering with our local Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA) guild, are delighted to be hosting the exhibition “Our Irish Women”, on loan from the National Museum of Ireland Country Life, Castlebar.

So, where did the idea for the exhibition come from?

The exhibition commemorates the 100-year anniversary of the Representation of the People Act (1918), which extended a limited form of suffrage to women in Ireland for the first time.  Moycullen Heritage are members of the Irish Community Archive Network (iCAN) – a National Museum of Ireland project improving access to Irish history and heritage by helping  communities share their local collections online.  Early in 2018, it was decided that each group within iCAN would research a woman that had in some way contributed to their community, county or country. These (mostly unknown) stories were then exhibited in the Courtyard Gallery at the National Museum of Ireland Country Life, after which, the exhibition travelled to each community in the Network arriving in Moycullen for the weekend of the 17th- 18 th August 2019.

ICA members at Our Irish Women Exhibition

Whose story?

The exhibition tells the stories of success, struggle, or of quiet diligence of 14 Irish women, from all backgrounds, who have made a difference in their community including the wonderful stories our own Lady Fingal (Daisy Burke) of Danesfield House and Violet Martin of Ross.

Launch evening

The free event will be opened on Saturday the 17th August at 7.30pm with two short talks on our local ladies included in the exhibition.

Daisy Burke (Lady Fingal) – Activist, Fashion Icon, Philanthropist and Author who had much involvement in the ICA, Camogie Association, Co-Operative Movement and Irish Industries.
Presented by Carmel Garrett, founding member of Knocknacarra ICA Guild and 3 times President County Galway Federation ICA.  Carmel is also a founder member of the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras, has been synonymous with Galway Youth Orchestra for over 30 years, and was the 2018 recipient of the Agnes O’Kane award recognising her voluntary work in this field.  Carmel also received the Arts, Culture, Heritage and Cúrsaí Gaeilge Award at the Galway City Mayoral Awards in April this year.

Violet Florence Martin – Novelist and Suffragette, having among her literary achievements the ‘Irish RM’ which became a TV series.
Presented by Moycullen’s Mary Clancy.  Mary is with the Political Science and Sociology Deptartment of NUIG and lectures in the field of women’s history and gender research.  She has had several works published and is a regular contributor to journals and conferences.  Mary is a former board member of the Heritage Forum at Galway City Council, an Honorary President of the Irish Labour History Society, a founder member of the Feminist History Forum, and a founder member of the European Association for Gender Research Education and Documentation.

The talks will be followed by light refreshments and a chance to browse the exhibition.

Moycullen ICA Guild will also have on display some of their craftwork and Moycullen Heritage will have on sale their recently released publications.
